I was wondering how long it would take before one of the ladies with some clout on the LPGA piped up about how Michelle Wie is garnering tons of attention despite the fact that she hasn't really accomplished jack sh*t as a pro. That day is today, thanks to the best player on the circuit.
From Reuters:
Former world number one Sorenstam took issue with a decision by teenager Wie to withdraw from a tournament last week when she was 14 over par, citing a wrist injury, only to practise two days later.
"I just feel there's a little bit of a lack of respect and class just to leave a tournament like that and then come out and practise here," Sorenstam told a news conference.
Wie was 16 holes into the opening round of last week's tournament in North Carolina week when she pulled out, complaining of a wrist injury that had kept her from playing since January.
Two days later, the 17-year-old, who recently graduated from high school, was practising at the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Maryland, the site of the LPGA Championship starting on Thursday.
That wrist really must have been killing her to have to withdraw with two holes left in the round. Many, including me, think it was because she was about to shoot an 88, barring her from LPGA events for the rest of the year (of which she isn't even a member - she's been competing on sponsor exemptions), but Miss Wie disagrees of course.
"I don't think about [shooting] 88," she said. "I mean, that's just ridiculous."
Whatever you say, Michelle. You had $20 million worth of endorsement reasons for pulling out.
Wie's troubles were compounded when her playing partners in a pro-am event on Monday at Bulle Rock lodged a complaint, prompting LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens to meet with Wie's father, B.J., and agent, Greg Nared.
No word on what the complaint was about, but it sounds to me like this is one 17-year-old that could learn a thing or two by shutting her piehole, listening to players like Annika Sorenstam, and try to
earn some of that misguided respect that's been given to her. Her sense of entitlement is doing nothing but making people mad and burning bridges with the fans who helped create the very image that lined her pockets. Then again, what does she care, she's set for life.
