I Really Miss Wide World Of Sports

So I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning and someone brought up the name of Jim McKay, which led me to reminisce about the glory days of my youth when every Saturday "Wide World of Sports" would air. They had the best stuff on that show. The theme song and opening montage alone was worth tuning in for each week. I mean who can ever forget, "Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat the human drama of athletic competition this is ABC's Wide World of Sports!"?

Running from 1961 to 1997, Wide World of Sports aired some of the most awesome sports ever seen at the time. Sports that a kid could really get into because they were so unique. Remember, this was all pre-glitzed up ESPN for the bulk of the show's run.

Hurling, rodeo, curling, jai-alai, firefighter's competitions, surfing, logger sports, demolition derby and badminton, as well as figure skating, skiing, gymnastics, and track and field competitions were just some of the events featured on the show. Of course one of my most favorites were the Saturdays that the Harlem Globetrotters would appear. If it was a Globetrotter Saturday on WWoS, I was not going outside to play that afternoon, baby.

For me though, none of those sports listed above epitomized Wide World of Sports more than barrel jumping.

How this never became an Olympic sport is beyond me, as well as the fact that it has somehow not been incorporated into the X-Games.

Saturdays for me have just not been the same since Wide World of Sports left the airwaves.
