Vernon Wells Is An Awesome Centre Fielder

During Toronto's game in Cleveland on Wednesday, some fans were giving Wells a bunch of crap, saying things like "You suck'" or "You like men". Not the most original taunts, but you have to remember these were Indians fans. Anyway, after all the heckling one of them had the nads to ask Wells for a ball, even going so far as to say that Torii Hunter had given them one. Wells decided that if they wanted a ball, he'd give them a ball ...

Between innings he got a new ball and wrote a message to the fan, then when he went back on the field the next inning he tossed it to him.

The message?

"Here's your ball, now please tell me what gas station you work at so I can come and yell at you when you're working. Please sit down, shut up and enjoy the game. From your favorite centre fielder, Vernon Wells."

Amazingly he says this isn't the first time he's done this.

"They all loved it," Wells said. "It's something that I've done before, maybe a handful of times. It gets them on your side."

I say it's amazing because it's amazing that none of these balls have hit the auction sites, or that we've never heard about him doing this before. I have a whole newfound respect for the Jays center fielder. Not only is he a heck of a ballplayer, he apparently has an excellent sense of humor, and is a really good sport. Just imagine if Barry Bonds had his personality?
