Frightening Moment At Daytona Yesterday

There are many things in sports that have to be scary. Going across the middle and stretching to catch a pass in the NFL. Having a 95 mile per hour fastball bearing down on your head as you stand at the plate. But there can be little in sports that's scarier than being in a pack of about 20 racecars going close to 200 miles per hour in a NASCAR race. Wait, we just found something even scarier. Being in a pack of about 20 racecars going close to 200 miles per hour in a NASCAR race and one of those guys is 72 FRICKIN' YEARS OLD!

From the Journal:

James Hylton, at 72, tried to make a bit of history yesterday by making the 500 field. Hylton hasn't raced on the Cup tour since 1993, and his last Daytona 500 was in 1983. He didn't make it, but he was giddy just at the try: "I don't remember the last time I had that much fun.

"The biggest thing is not about the track or the car, but when you're running with this breed of superstars, you're not familiar with them and you don't want to do anything to get them out of shape. They were all real good to me, every one of them."
I get nervous seeing a 72-year old driving next to me on Main Street, veering all over the place, fluctuating in speed from 20 MPH to 40 MPH and back again, but going two hunnert in a pack of racecars on a speedway? No thanks.

Remember last year when all those Formula One Euros refused to race at Indy because of concern over the tires? I'm surprised Dale, Kasey, Tony and the boys set foot on the track with this geezer. Then again, they probably figured it would be easy to keep track of him since his left turn signal would be on the whole time.
